With the rise of #OwnVoices (a term for recommending books about diverse characters by authors who come from those diverse communities) people began questioning that the popular Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling was so devoid of people of color. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the play billed as the eighth chapter of the series, then cast British actress Noma Dumezweni to play Hermione Granger.

Fans took the casting and ran with it, creating headcanons that Hermione or Harry come from diverse backgrounds. Therefore, here are ten pieces of Harry Potter fan art with diverse characters at the center.

10 Golden Trio

Golden Trio by Jackie-lyn, on Deviantart, is a detailed drawing reminiscent of 2-D cartoon animation work. It's a winter scene, with the trio huddled around bluebell flames in a jam jar, presumably courtesy of Hermione. Everyone is wrapped up warmly in Gryffindor winter wear, and the color red definitely stands out with the tan background. Both Harry and Hermione are depicted as being of a diverse background, with Hermione as Black and Harry Indian. Eyes are also a prominent part of this fanart, and the overall effect is very calming.

9 Fashionable Hermione

Dasstark has created a realistic-looking art series of a fashion-conscious Black Hermione on Tumblr. There are three drawings: one for the modern witch, one as though Hermione were on her way to an art class as an accomplished student, and one where she is fashionably dressed in a warm winter coat. The artwork is lush and artistic while still seeming real. Her hair curls in various directions, and vibrantly jumps off the page, which also draws the eye. The outfits, similarly, are realistic and fashionable while still fitting Hermione as a person.

8 Cat Problems

Twiggymcbones puts forth the concern that feather quills and cats would not get along at Hogwarts. Hence her fanart of Hermione and Crookshanks fighting over a feather quill on Tumblr. Hermione is Black and her hair spreads out gloriously around her head; she's been rudely interrupted from her hard work. Crookshanks's tail is, fittingly, in bottlebrush form, very splayed out.

The feather is an iridescent green that jumps off the page. Hermione is reading her textbooks by the light of a bluebell flame and floating candles, which feels very like Hogwarts.

7 Friends

Natello has created a stunning piece of fanart, posted on Deviantart. The trio is standing together, best friends. The angles are sharp and the art style is very like modern 2-D cartoons such as Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure. The uniforms also lend an air of the Hogwarts school setting, and it's clear from the background that they are in a classroom. Hermione is again depicted as Black, with her bushy hair tied back in a heavy ponytail. Harry is also depicted as Indian, his skin tone darker than Ron's, though still light. The angles are appealing, as is the color palette.

6 James and His Parents

Another headcanon as to how Harry got his Indian heritage is that James was biracial because his mother was Indian and his father was white. Therefore, we get this lovely sketch of a young James and his parents, Fleamont and Euphemia. James' mother is depicted in a headscarf, showcasing her heritage and culture. The warm red tone of the entire drawing, shown through James and Fleamont's scarves and Euphemia's headscarf, lends a sense of love and family to the scene. We applaud the artist for going further back in the timeline for inspiration, and for drawing it out and sharing it with fellow fans.

5 Brewing Up a Potion

Loquaciousliterature drew a studious Hermione for this piece of fanart on Tumblr. Hermione is again depicted as Black, and her hair is pushed back as she concentrates on the potions textbook held open in front of her. Ingredients float above her, and others are on the table in front of her. Her wand is held at the ready for the next step in the recipe.

The pink color of the potion and the purple background create a soothing dark winter palette. Hermione looks like a great study partner here, with a calming workspace.

4 Golden Trio

This piece of fanart by sah-bai-dee, on Tumblr, depicts the trio spending time with each other in their fourth year. Hermione, depicted as Black, hair held back with a headband, has a S.P.E.W. pin on her jacket. Harry is depicted with a much darker Indian skin tone than he is usually drawn with. The style is very stark and sharp, with a white background, with the exception of the ground. Ron's freckles stand out more starkly than usual. Hedwig's coloring, interestingly enough, is a glorious light orange due to the lighting.

This drawing by boaillustration on Tumblr is happiness in its purest form. The Golden Trio are clearly having a good time with their group hug. Harry is depicted as Indian and Hermione is Black, bushy hair strewn every which way. The lack of background forces the viewer to keep their focus on the characters, which helps in considering them separately from their plotlines of the books. It's clear that Harry, Ron, and Hermione are older here, so this scene might take place after the series has ended and their lives are relaxed enough to be fully happy.

2 Harry

This drawing, on Tumblr, of an Indian Harry creeping though the library at night under the Invisibility Cloak, feels most real. It might be the rough sense of the drawing or the dark colors, but something about it feels raw.

The light shining off Harry's wand does light up the rest of the fanart, interestingly enough, so that the shadows get deeper in the far corners. The artwork also feels similar to the mystery of the early books of the series, which were still fairly light in terms of young adult content.

1 Trio

This series of sketches by kreuganish on Tumblr features a very serious and studious trio. Harry stands with a stack of paper in his hand, presumably homework. Hermione is also working on papers, as well as raising her hand in class to answer a question. Knowing her, she'll have the right answer! Ron appears to be thinking deep thoughts. The lack of a true background splits these drawings up into separate scenes, which is fitting for their separate actions. Considering the school theme, the studious nature of the drawings is also fitting.
